Upcott is an Arts and Crafts gem - a big rambling house with its own little turret, high above the quiet coastal road between Beer and Lyme Regis

Many years spent travelling the world in professional careers, followed by the birth of our two children, shaped our thoughts on what makes great holiday accommodation. Here at devonretreat.com we aim to exceed your expectations on all levels

First, the location. Upcott really is by the seaside – there are only trees between us and the sea! The Gallery is also only 400 yards from Beer's beautiful beach

Second, you will sleep soundly at Upcott and The Gallery. Our generous king-size beds have sprung slats and are fitted with hotel quality Vi-Spring mattresses. Our rooms are large and airy, and the locations are peaceful and private

Finally, and most importantly, we aim to provide a luxurious environment that is significantly reduced in domestic pollutants and kind to those suffering from allergies. For example:

•We have used organic paints and finishes throughout. Our beautiful Douglas fir floorboards are sealed using natural wax oils

•Our beds and bedding are Greenpeace and Oeko-Tex certified, and we use 'Ecover' non-petrochemical cleaning products

•We use solar panels to supplement our hot water at Upcott, compost vegetable waste, use water butts to collect rainwater and provide recycling facilities

•Our furniture is made from solid wood and many pieces have been restored during renovation

•We reduced our carbon footprint by installing high-efficiency heating systems, extensive insulation and thermally efficient curtains (it really does make a difference in a period house!)

Don’t just take our work for it. Upcott House is a preferred accommodation provider for nearby River Cottage HQ and Hix Oyster and Fish House, and received an award for Environment and Fine Food by Alistair Sawday’s Ethical Collection - Green Europe 2009
